GIVE YOURSELVES TO GOD: Do Not Let Sin Control the Way You Live
A Story of Surrender: Daniel’s Struggle With Hidden Sin.
Daniel was a respected youth leader in his church, known for his charisma, powerful prayers, and sharp biblical insight. He had grown up in a Christian home, had memorized Scriptures from a young age, and was even mentoring a group of teenage boys in his community.
But behind closed doors, Daniel battled a secret sin—pornography.
At first, he convinced himself it was a minor struggle, something he could “handle privately.” Every Sunday, he stood tall, raised holy hands in worship, and encouraged others to give themselves fully to God. But by night, shame visited him. He had not truly surrendered this part of his life. He allowed sin to quietly control his behavior.
His double life began to take a toll—spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. His prayer life dwindled, his joy evaporated, and guilt became a constant companion. Eventually, after a particularly convicting sermon on Romans 6:12—*“Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires”—*Daniel broke down.
He confided in his mentor, sought accountability, and began the hard journey of healing and surrender. It wasn't easy, but each day he learned to give more of himself to God, resisting sin and walking in grace. In time, his testimony became a source of light for others caught in the same struggle.
Understanding What It Means to Give Yourself to God
Romans 6:12 – A Call to Daily Surrender
“Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.” — Romans 6:12 (NIV)
The command to “give yourselves to God” is not a one-time event—it is a daily, intentional surrender of every area of your life. It means not just attending church or quoting Scripture but aligning your choices, habits, and desires with God's will.
The Real Danger of Letting Sin Control You
When sin controls your life, it becomes your master. You may think you're in control, but sin quietly dictates your choices, ruins your peace, damages your relationships, and separates you from the joy of communion with God.
Paul writes in Romans 6:16:
“Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey?”
Real-Life Example: Angela’s Compromise
Angela was a young woman with a promising career. She was also in a relationship that started innocently but quickly led to sexual compromise. Though she knew it was wrong, she rationalized her actions—“We’ll get married soon.” But the more she gave in, the harder it was to stop.
Eventually, she got pregnant. Her boyfriend walked away, and she was left broken. But in her brokenness, she found God. She repented, gave herself back to Him completely, and is now helping other young women understand the importance of purity and surrender.
Biblical Examples of Those Who Surrendered vs. Those Who Didn't
1. Joseph vs. Samson
Joseph resisted temptation in Potiphar’s house and fled from sin (Genesis 39), showing what it means to give oneself to God completely.
Samson, on the other hand, repeatedly gave in to his desires—especially with Delilah (Judges 16)—and it ultimately led to his downfall.
2. David’s Repentance
King David fell into sin with Bathsheba, but unlike Saul, David repented deeply (Psalm 51). His brokenness led to restoration because he turned his heart back to God.
How Can We Truly Give Ourselves to God?
1. Acknowledge Your Sin Without Excuse
Admitting sin is the first step. Don't justify or ignore it. Be like the prodigal son who “came to his senses” (Luke 15:17).
2. Confess and Repent Sincerely
Confession isn't just saying “I'm sorry,” but turning from sin with a desire to never return (1 John 1:9).
3. Develop Spiritual Disciplines
-
Regular Bible study
-
Prayer and fasting
-
Fellowship with other believers
These practices help strengthen your walk and weaken sin’s grip.
4. Seek Accountability
Just like Daniel in our opening story, find a mentor or godly friend who can check in with you regularly.
Lessons to Learn From This Message
1. Hidden sin eventually surfaces and destroys
Nothing stays hidden forever (Luke 12:2). Unconfessed sin blocks your spiritual growth.
2. God’s grace is always available, but we must choose obedience
His grace doesn’t excuse sin—it empowers us to overcome it (Titus 2:11-12).
3. Freedom comes through full surrender
As long as you cling to parts of your life, you'll never experience the true freedom Christ offers (Galatians 5:1).
